FAQs

How is it possible to buy a bed online?

We have narrowed down our entire bed range and selected just our best sellers to sell online.  Given the number of variances (around size, comfort, spring type and whether you require a bed or just a mattress), it still seems like a lot of options but when you use our filters on the left hand side to narrow down your selection, you'll find a few options to select from.

Once we receive your order, or before you place your order, we encourage you to give us a call to ensure that the bed or mattress you selected is the best one for you.

We have more than 30 years experience in manufacturing and selling beds and are committed in ensuring we provide the best bed, comfort made - just for you.

What is the difference between your Best Buy and Royal Range?

Our Best Buy Range of Beds are great for teenagers, the spare room, or people looking for new bed on a a budget.  They are made with a Bonnell Springs system.

Our Royal Range of Beds are our more elite range of beds as they are made with Italian Pocket Springs, which comes with a 10 year warranty.  If you have an issue with "partner disturbance" at night, this is the best support system to ensure a good nights sleep.

How are you able to offer such quality beds for so much less than other retailers?

Undoubtedly the concept of buying goods directly from the factory results in massive savings. The savings are derived firstly (and obviously) by bypassing retail margins. The factory direct concept also saves extra rent, insurance, sales peoples wages, freight (from the factory to the shop) retail profit margins, phone lines, electricity and so on. These one off costs are not duplicated by a factory retail shop, so you don't pay them twice!

The Bed Barn helps you save on new beds not just by buying factory direct but also by huge buying power. The Bed Barn is one of many Factory Directs throughout New Zealand that buy raw materials together. Through joint purchases they have buying power way beyond what is achievable in stand alone operations. The group also own their own separate Importing company, Wholesale Bed Supplies Limited. This company also ultimately contributes to savings for the customer as well.

In addition to savings, two other distinct advantages arise. One is quality of materials and construction. The other is the "knowledge" the staff can relay to help customers know that they are buying so that they can make a wise decision on the purchase of a new bed.

What different types of springs are there in your mattresses?

Spring Unit System

Bonnell (Standard Spring)

By far the most common spring system world wide is the Bonnell, estimated to be about 80% of the world market. Tried and proven over many years our NZ Manufacturer offers a 10 year guarantee on the unit. Many manufacturers disguise the Bonnell type under other names to portray exclusivity, however we prefer to call them by their proper name. There are variations on the Bonnell system, how they are made will alter the feel. The Bonnell coil is hour glass shaped and the coil is knotted on each end. The coils are strung together by a spiral shaped wire called a helical wire. Variations include coil height, wire gauge, number of turns in the coil, waist size and coil diameter. The coil diameter determines the number of coils in the spring unit. All of these factors have to be built in balance to achieve the right amount of comfort and support.

Pocket Springs

Pocket Springs have been made for a number of years but more recently are becoming increasingly popular in NZ.
Their benefits primarily are that they virtually eliminate partner disturbance and that they very closely follow your body shape and contours. They are usually zoned with stronger springs in the center region and softer springs in each end so that you have more torso support but more give for the shoulders.
They are built by inserting each individual coil into a synthetic unwoven fabric pocket. There is no mechanical connection (ie helical wire) linking the springs together so, as a result, no transfer of movement from one part of the mattress to another. We use high quality Italian pocket springs.

What type of bases do you provide?

The Bed Barn has its own woodwork division and we manufacture all our own bases to our own unique designs. All joints are laminated, glued and stapled and we use more timber than most other manufacturers.

King, Super king and California king beds are all split or two piece bases. We also manufacture trundler over beds, trundlers and drawer divans in all sizes and all models.

Bases come in four different styles:

1. Platform Base

Platform base is slatted and strapped with a foam overlay and fully upholstered to match the mattress. This type of base has become increasingly popular in recent years as it helps eliminate roll together, hammocking and partner disturbance. Depth of bases is 175mm or 250mm. All bases are fitted with headboard bolts and legs with gliders or castors. We can also manufacture customs bases to suit your individual size and specification requirements.

2. Coil Sprung Base

Older coil sprung bases tended to induce roll together and hammocking, however our newer unique design utilizes a low profile sprung unit. i.e. shorter spring that has less travel lessening the jelling effect and maximizing stability of the bed. The spring unit is steelwire edged and extends to the outer perimeter of the bed so that weight transfer is evenly distributed over the entire surface area of the bed eliminating problems associated with older design. The use of older type coil sprung bases is limited now as people become more aware of better systems.

3. Torsion Bar Sprung Base

A double knee action torsion bar spring system known as the sigma grid and imported from the USA is used extensively by american bed manufacturers. Originally imported by Wholesale Bed Supplies Ltd. several NZ member manufactures enjoy exclusive use of this system. Double knee action means that as weight is transferred to the spring the torsion bars press toward each other to prevent lateral sway. The Springs are very firm, much firmer than coil sprung bases and are designed to give impact resistance when someone 'drops' onto the bed. Because of their firmness and even distribution over the timber base, back support is excellent, roll together prevented and strong side support given.

 4. Divan Bases

We also make divan bases for those that need extra storage under their bed.  These are constructed of wood and then covered with a choice of fabrics. Queen bases have one draw in each side and two draws in the end of the bed. Headboard bolts are inserted in the head of the bed. With single and king single bed there are two smaller drawers in one side of the bed. We allow for headboard bolts in both ends of the bed so if you wish to turn the bed around you are still able to have a headboard.

Do you sell headboards?

We now make covered headboards in a variety of fabrics and colours along with our standard black, brown and grey.

What kind of quality assurance do you provide?

We are sometimes asked how our beds compare with other makes. As we are competing in a tight market where people demand value for money we are especially conscious of the need to use best quality materials.

As result our inner spring units for instance are made on one of New Zealands' newest spring making machines, with an investment of nearly one million dollars the product has to be excellent. Our polyurethane foams are made by C Tech the new brand name for Comfort Technologies. Formally known as Vitafoam, the company is backed by 30 years of research and manufacture. Their new state of the art, fully computerised foam plant is a major investment in cutting edge technology. As they produce a premium range of performance polyurethane foams, their product comes with up to 10 years guarantee.

A range of fabrics are imported by quilting company. These are carefully selected by firstly examining the yarn construction to ensure a long durable performance and for comfortable feel. Secondly by colour and contemporary design to cover a variety of tastes.
